Of Delivery and Delivery Vehicles

Every day, goods, services and passengers are moved from one point to another. With global trade, transport activities become all the more essential. The transportation network is the backbone that makes all the delivery services possible. Cargo or physical goods are mainly delivered through roads and railroads, as well as shipping lanes and airline networks. Meanwhile, pipelines, power grids and computer networks serve their own delivery purposes, too.

Delivery is a sub-category of distribution, the general process of delivering goods. Logistics, on the other end, is the study of effective processes for the delivery and disposition of goods and personnel. Entities engaged in the delivery of commercial goods from point of production or storage to point of sale is usually called distributors. Those engaged in the delivery of goods from point of sale to the consumer are mainly called delivery service providers.

The presence of delivery vehicles and delivery methodologies is, of course, the main reason why service quality in the sector is enhanced to more than acceptable levels. With transport via land infrastructure, delivery is done through specialised land vehicles like semi-trailers that are outfitted with different components like box trailers, flatbeds, carriers, tanks and others. There are also railroad trains that make deliveries. Worthy of mentioning are armoured cars, dump trucks, and concrete mixers. Still another specialised delivery vehicle is a delivery truck, which is also suitable for the transfer of goods or services to customers. Common passenger vehicles like buses, vans, pick-ups, cars, motorcycles and bicycles are used for delivery purposes as well. Additionally, if the destination is distant or remote, delivery is generally done through the use of small vehicles like snowmobiles, horses, sleds, etc.
